Every Child Counts (ECC) funded by First 5 Alameda, has provided additional resources through their Intensive Family Support initiative with a focus on the children of teen parents.

Teen Family Support Program:  Every Child Counts

Brighter Beginnings ECC clients are the children of participants in our AFLP and Cal-Programs, and we provide intensive, one-to-one family support services that benefit these very young children.

Observations – Home and Office
During in-home and office visits, Family Advocates observe the child. They then show parents a variety of methods they can use to stimulate their child's growth and development. They may demonstrate creative ways to play with children or make toys from household items. They stress appropriate discipline and share guidelines parents can use to be effective teachers and role models for their children.

Identifying Additional Needs
For children who need additional assistance, Famiy Advocates sometimes call upon specialists and outside resources, such as MediCal, Social Security, California Children's Services, hospitals, and other medical providers. Case Managers also screen children for problems with movement, speech, hearing, learning, or emotional and social development. They may then refer these children for appropriate services.

Exciting Results
The results of this program are exciting. Children who receive guidance and stimulation from their parents and support for their special needs are ready to succeed in school-and in life.
